The Ford Sigma engine

The 1.6-litre Ford Sigma is the engine in most of today’s entry-level Caterhams, including the 270 and the 310, and earlier cars such as the Roadsport and Supersport.

On paper the numbers look modest. On the road, in a car that weighs around half a tonne, they really aren’t. A Sigma Seven revs freely, sounds great and is quick enough to embarrass far more expensive machinery. We once raced one against a Porsche Boxster to prove it.

It’s also a tough, simple engine that’s inexpensive to service, which makes a Sigma car an ideal first Caterham, and one plenty of owners never feel the need to trade up from. Every car we sell is inspected, serviced and MOT’d, and comes with our in-house warranty.
