The Ford Duratec engine
When you want more shove, the Ford Duratec is the engine to look for. The 2.0-litre Duratec has powered the faster Caterhams for years. That includes the Roadsport and Superlight models, and the current 360 and 420, while the 620 adds a supercharger. Its bigger 2.3-litre sibling, developed with Cosworth, is the engine in the CSR 260.
Compared with the smaller engines, a Duratec gives you lots of mid-range torque, so the car pulls hard from low revs without needing to be wrung out. That makes it just as good for long road trips as it is on track. To see what that means in practice, we took an entry-level Duratec 360 to meet a Mercedes-AMG GT.
The Duratec is also the engine in most of the new Caterhams we sell, and a well-understood unit we service every week.
