Callum’s Story…
You could say that Callum McDougall has Caterham cars in his DNA! With Callum’s father being a keen racer of Caterhams, and his mother the coordinator for all Caterham’s in-house racing championship, Callum grew up immersed in the world of Caterham cars with the backdrop to his childhood being many, many weekends of Caterham racing. But it didn’t stop there…
An ambitious and entrepreneurial young professional, Callum would take leave from his day job to work with Caterham, be it washing cars or making tea, anything to further engage his passion and build his network in the field. In 2011 he finally took the plunge to turn his hobby into his career, leaving the banking sector to work full time as a sales executive at Caterham Cars.
During his time at Caterham, Surrey, Callum found new homes for almost 400 Caterham cars, whilst simultaneously navigating the commercial upheaval of a management restructure and re-brand, which ultimately brought about his next opportunity. And in 2013 he joined two of Caterham’s ex-directors at their brand new company, Sevens & Classics, where Callum embraced his proven sales success to take the role of Sales Manager.
For the next five years Callum helped to grow the business, with responsibility for sourcing, buying and selling in excess of 1,000 of Caterham cars, but most importantly, looking after their customers.
Following on from this success, Callum was looking for a fresh challenge, something where he could add to his armoury of knowledge, and in 2018 he took the diverse role of Business Development Manager at United Autosports race team.
Here he became immersed in the professional motorsport world and ultimately found himself taking on the task of bringing budding new Racewear manufacturer HRX to the UK. For the next three years Callum set the foundations for HRX to grow their operation internationally, as well as managing the entire UK market place, from grass roots racing to multiple BTCC champion Ash Sutton.
Now with 10 years’ experience of managing all aspects of a rapidly growing business and establishing a strong reputation in the Motorsport world, the time was right for Callum to take the plunge and embark on his own journey.
In 2021, Callum combined his experience and knowledge to support Caterham owners and motorsports professionals and enthusiasts in the north of the UK and beyond, in the shape of Turn 7.
Callum’s boundless passion for Caterham cars is clear to all who meet him, paired with his vast knowledge of each model and variant is what makes him the perfect matchmaker for Caterham owners old and new.
I have been lucky enough to drive almost every model and variation Caterham ever built. Caterham cars are my passion, I will never tire of them. I still race a Caterham and will never be without one.”
Jim’s Story…
Jim’s background is in accountancy, a vocation that enabled him to follow his passion for sports and classic cars, having worked not only for mainstream motor manufacturers but also for Formula One teams.
Having been a keen racer since the 1970s, starting out in Minis and competing on and off in a variety of cars ever since, Jim has attained a significant number of race wins and championships over the years.
Jim built and raced the first of many Sevens in 1986, and went on to work with Caterham Cars to produce an Assembly Guide for kit builders at that time. In 1991, he and Callum’s mother took over the co-ordination of the Caterham racing championships which included creating the concept for what is now known as the Caterham Academy.
Jim manages many of the background activities at Turn 7.
“They’re more of a driver’s car” says Carl, “you don’t have the nice things like traction control and ABS to help you deal with them, it’s really going back to basics which allows you to be more at one with the car”.
Carl’s Story…
Having started his automotive career back in the day of YTS schemes, Carl did his City & Guilds in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair during a time when cars didn’t have the luxury of driver aids we see on today’s modern motor cars, which is what he’s really come to love about working on Caterhams.
A keen motorsport enthusiast for some years, Carl’s passion is rallying, having competed in a Peugeot 205 GTI from the early 1990s until 2004 when sadly rallying had to make way for his three young children.
Despite loving the true grit of Caterham driving, throughout his career Carl has been at the forefront of the evolution of motor cars and has strong experience with the more mainstream brands we see on our daily commute, partnering in Turn 7 Automotive following 8 years running a local MOT centre, and has also recently completed a four-year qualification in electric-vehicle servicing and repair. Other household names he boasts on his CV include Ford Motor Company, Reg Vardy Plc and for those more local you may remember Massingberd Harrogate.
