The CDX stood for Caterham Drive Experience. These were cars built by Caterham, for Caterham, to demonstrate just how unbelievebly good these little rocketships these cars really are.

Caterham have been running their CDX enterprise since the early/mid 2000’s, and have been seen running thier days courese and demonstrations from a multitue of racing paddocks, to the Autosport International arena. Their success in promoting the brand to the masses has been such that Caterham devote considerable resources to the project every year.

As cars, the CDX was always quite special. These were often not overly powerful machines, but my word did they have the spec list thrown at them. This 2013 example is powered by the 1.6L Sigma Supersport engine. This is the original fixed cam version of the Sigma, with high lift profile cams, producing 140bhp and revving all the way up to 7,400 RPM. This is then paired to one of Caterhams famous six-speed close ratio gearboxes via a light-weight flywheel and clutch. This means that the power from the engine controled via pin-point precision from the throttle pedal with instantanios reactions, and that close ratio gearbox drops you perfectly back into the powerband at the top of every gear change. It truly is a magical combination.

In addition to the lovely powerplant and transmission, the power is put down at the back by one of Caterham’s Titan limited slip differential units, with fully uprated and adjustable suspension, with adjustable rear anti-roll bar. And if that wasnt enough, these CDX cars were also adorned with Caterhams uprated quad piston front calipers with ventilated discs, and an uprated brake master cylinder for maximum stopping power.

These were HOT Caterham’s through and through, with no holding back when it came to the mechanicals. Sure, they arent powered by a fire breathing, supercharged Duratec, but you dont need it when it comes to have serious fun.

Having been discharged from its years of service with Caterham in 2019, it was sold to a private owner, who had the car stripped, painted, rebuilt and registered in 2020, on a “20” plate. Since then, it has covered less than 2000 miles.

This would make the perfect partner for someone looking for a focused Caterham, which would be epic on trackdays, or sprinting/hillclimbing, but aslo totally usable on the roads.
